Common use
Ilosone (erythromycin) use to treat bacterial infections including those of ears, throat, and eyes, lower and upper respiratory tract, whooping cough, urinary tract infections, listeriosis and heart infections. Ilosone is also used to treat sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) such as syphilis and gonorrhea as well as rheumatic fever, and bacterial endocarditis. Ilosone is used especially when patients are allergic or sensitive to sulfa drugs or penicillin.

How Ilosone Works
Ilosone is part of a group of antibiotics called macrolide antibiotics, its antimicrobial spectrum is similar or slightly larger than penicillin. Erthromycin interferes with a bacteria's production of useful proteins which is the basis of its antimicrobial action.

Tablets (250mg, 500mg)

Initial dosage for someone weighing less then 175 lbs (80 kg) is 250 mg four times per day, or 500 mg twice per day. For patients heavier then 80 kg, the recommended dose is double (500 mg 4 times per day, or 1000 mg twice per day). The total daily dosage should never exceed 4g per day. Children under the age of 12 should be give 15-25 mg per pound of body weight, not exceeding the adult dosage. For most conditions treatment should be continued for 10 days.

Erythromycin may be taken with or without food; however optimal blood levels of erythromycin are obtained when taken on an empty stomach (at least 30 minutes and preferably 2 hours before or after meals).

In case of serious and persistent symptoms of liver disorders ranging to acute liver failure and loss of hearing consult your doctor about medical attention.

Ilosone is contraindicated in people who have an allergy to Erythromycin, or any of its other ingredients and in patients with liver failure. Speak to a doctor before beginning treatment with Erythromycin if you are allerguic to penicillin or other medications or have a history of the following conditions: Liver disease, such as cirrhosis, or hepatitis, Kidney disease, such as kidney failure (renal failure), irregular heart rhythm (arrhythmia), or Myasthenia gravis.

Antibiotics erythromycin can disrupt the normal bacteria cycle in the digestive tract, allowing undesirable bacteria to grow sometimes causing diarrhea or if severe pseudomembranous colitis. Watch for signs of this problem, such as bloody stool or severe diarrhea.

Antibiotics can cause yeast infections, because they get rid of "good" bacteria, let your healthcare provider know if you are prone to yeast infections or other fungal infections.

There is the slight chance that Erythromycin may worsen or, in very rare cases cause myasthenia gravis, the loss of control or sagging of muscles in the face).

Erythromycin will probably not cause harm to an unborn baby but full effects are unknown. Before taking Ilosone, tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. Ilosone passes into breast milk but it is unknown whether it causes harm to a nursing baby. Consult your doctor before using this medication if you are pregnant or breast-feeding a baby.

Possible Side Effects
It is common that Ilosone causes the following minor side effects: diarrhea, loss of appetite, nausea, stomach pain, or vomiting. If these side effects persist or become overly bothersome contact your doctor or health-care professional.

If you experience any of these less common but serious side effects contact you doctor immediately: bloody stools, severe diarrhea, decreased hearing or hearing loss, muscle weakness, irregular heartbeat, red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin, seizures, stomach pain/cramps, or symptoms of liver problems (yellowing of the skin or eyes, black or pale stools, dark urine, severe or persistent nausea, vomiting, or loss of appetite).

If you experience any of these rare and very serious side effects contact a healthcare professional or doctor immediately: symptoms of myasthenia gravis (droopy eyelids, blurry or double vision, muscle weakness or failure).

A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing. This may not be a complete list of side effects and may be subject to change, consult with your doctor or pharmacist if you are experiencing any worrisome side effects.

Ilosone Erythromycin and Alcohol
There are no specific contraindications to use of alcohol while on this medication. However, erythromycin is primarily metabolized by the liver, and general common sense would indicate you should be caution about the concomitant use of alcohol.
Alcohol, when combined with erythromycin, may delay absorption and therefore the clinical effects of the antibiotic. The mechanism appears to be due to slowed gastric emptying by alcohol. Data is available only for erythromycin ethylsuccinate. Patients should be advised to avoid alcohol while taking erythromycin salts.
