Uses For Principen
Ampicillin belongs to a class of antibiotics called penicillins that are used for treating bacterial infections. Other members of this class include amoxicillin (Amoxil), piperacillin (Pipracil), ticarcillin (Ticar) and several others. These antibiotics all have a similar mechanism of action. They stop bacteria from multiplying by preventing bacteria from forming the walls that surround them. The walls are necessary to protect bacteria from their environment and to keep the contents of the bacterial cell together. Bacteria cannot survive without a cell wall. Penicillins are most effective when bacteria are actively multiplying and forming cell walls. Ampicillin is effective against many bacteria including H. influenzae, N. gonorrhoea, E. coli, Salmonella, and Shigella, streptococci and certain strains of staphylococci.

Indications
Principen Ampicillin is indicated in the treatment of a wide range of bacterial infections, including infections of the respiratory tract, throat, gastrointestinal tract, genitals, and urinary tract.

Contraindications
Consult a doctor before taking Principen if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if you are allergic to any of its ingredients, if you are taking any other medications (especially probenecid, allopurinol, or other antibiotics), or if you have (or have a history of) kidney disease, liver disease, colitis or mononucleosis.

Ampicillin INTERACTIONS
Probenecid (Benemid) causes an increase in the amount of ampicillin in the body. Use of ampicillin with allopurinol (Zyloprim) can increase the incidence of drug-related skin rash.

Dosage
Available caplet sizes: 250mg, 500mg

Ampicillin is taken orally, either one hour before or two hours after a meal. For most infections, the standard dosage is from 250 to 500 mg four times daily for one to two weeks. For gonorrhea, a single 3.5 gram dose will suffice.

Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include short breath, diarrhea, nausea, stomach cramps, and vomiting. If you suspect overdose, contact your local emergency room or poison control centre immediately.

Side Effects
Common side effects of ampicillin include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, diarrhea, abdominal pain, rash, itching, headache, confusion and dizziness. Patients with a history of allergic reactions to other penicillins should not receive ampicillin. Persons who are allergic to the cephalosporin class of antibiotics, which are related to the penicillins, for example, cefaclor (Ceclor), cephalexin (Keflex), and cefprozil (Cefzil), may or may not be allergic to penicillin

Principen Ampicillin and Alcohol
In fact, the antibiotic will work even if alcohol is taken with it. Drinking alcohol with some antibiotics might cause very huge side effects (called "antabuse effect") and should be avoided. However, Ampicillin is quite a big antibiotic and given in big infections. I don't think you'll have "antabuse effect" if you drink alcohol, but you'll have some exacerbated side effects because of your infection and because of your antibiotics.
