Uses For Seromycin
Cycloserine is used with other medications to treat tuberculosis (TB). In some cases, it may also be used to treat urinary tract infections (UTIs). It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. This antibiotic treats only bacterial infections. It will not work for viral infections (such as common cold, flu). Unnecessary use or misuse of any antibiotic can lead to its decreased effectiveness.

How Cycloserine Works
Seromycin is produced by a strain of Streptomyces orchidaceus and has also been synthesized. The terminal two amino acid residues of the murein precursor lipid II consist of D-alanine, which is produced by the enzyme alanine racemase; the two residues are joined by D-alanine ligase. Both enzymes are competitively inhibited by Cycloserine.

Seromycin is indicated in the treatment of active pulmonary and extrapulmonary tuberculosis (including renal disease) especially when the main antibiotic used to treat this infections like: streptomycin, isoniazid, rifampin, and ethambutol, have proven inadequate. In cases of Tuberculosis, Seromycin should be administered with other effective chemotherapy and therapeutic treatments.

Seromycin may be effective in the treatment of acute urinary tract infections caused by susceptible strains of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, especially Enterobacter sp. and Escherichia coli. It is generally not more (usually less) effective than other antimicrobial agents in the treatment of urinary tract infections caused by bacteria other than mycobacteria. Use of Seromycin in these infections should be considered only when more conventional treatments have failed.

Tablets 250 mg
Seromycin is effective orally and is currently administered only by this route. The usual dosage is 500 mg to 1 g daily in divided doses monitored by blood levels. The initial adult dosage most frequently given is 250 mg twice daily at 12–hour intervals for the first 2 weeks. A daily dosage of 1 gram should not be exceeded.

Toxic effects may include headache, vertigo, confusion, drowsiness, hyper-irritability, paresthesias, dysarthria, and psychosis. Following larger overdose, paralysis, convulsions, and coma may occur. Ethyl alcohol may increase the risk of seizures in patients receiving Cycloserine. In case of overdose or if you suspect you’ve taken too much, immediately call local emergency or poison control.
