How Generic Suprax works
Suprax belongs to the cephalosporin group of antibiotics. Suprax kills bacteria by interfering with the ability of bacteria to form cell walls, preventing them from properly forming.
Available tablet sizes: 50mg, 100mg, 200mg
The recommended dosage of Suprax is 400 mg daily. For the treatment of uncomplicated cervical/urethral gonococcal infections, a single oral dose of 400 mg is recommended. Take Suprax with food or milk to reduce postadministrative nausea.
In the treatment of infections due to S. pyogenes, a therapeutic dosage of Suprax should be administered for at least 10 days.
The recommended dose is 8 mg/kg/day. This may be administered as a single daily dose or may be given in two divided doses, as 4 mg/kg every 12 hours. Children weighing more than 50 kg, or older than 12 years, should be treated with the recommended adult dose.
Suprax may be administered in the presence of impaired renal function. Normal dose and schedule may be employed in patients with creatinine clearances of 60 mL/min or greater. Patients whose clearance is between 21 and 60 mL/min or patients who are on renal hemodialysis may be given 75% of the standard dosage at the standard dosing interval (i.e., 300 mg daily). Patients whose clearance is < 20 mL/min, or patients who are on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis may be given half the standard dosage at the standard dosing interval (i.e., 200 mg daily). Neither hemodialysis nor peritoneal dialysis remove significant amounts of drug from the body.
If you missed a dose take it as soon as you remember. If you take Suprax once daily take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Next dose should be taken in 10-12 hours. If it was prescribed to you to take this medication twice or thrice daily take the missed dose and then the next one in 5-6 or 2-4 hours accordingly. Never double dose this medication.
Symptoms of Suprax overdose include muscle spasms and seizures. If overdose is suspected, contact your local emergency room or poison control center immediately.
Suprax is indicated to treat uncomplicated urinary tract infections caused by Escherichia coli and Proteus mirabilis, otitis media caused by Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella (Branhamella) catarrhalis, pharyngitis and tonsillitis caused by S. pyogenes, acute bronchitis and acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae, and uncomplicated gonorrhea (cervical/urethral) caused by Neisseria gonorrhea.
Consult a doctor before taking Suprax if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if you are allergic to any of its ingredients or any other antibiotics (especially penicillins, or cephalosporin antibiotics such as cefaclor or cephalexin), if you are taking any other medications (especially other antibiotics, anticoagulants such as warfarin, aspirin, carbamazepine [Tegretol], probenecid, or vitamins), or if you have a history of kidney disease, liver disease, colitis, Crohn’s disease, bleeding, blood clotting problems, poor nutrition, or diarrhea or other stomach problems.
