How Trecator-sc Works
Ethionamide is an antibiotic. It prevents the growth of bacteria in your body.
An initial dosage of 250mg daily, slowly increased to 750 - 1000 mg a day is recommended in most instances. A regimen of 250 mg daily for 1 or 2 days, followed by 250 mg twice daily for 1 or 2 days with a subsequent increase up to 1 gm in 3 or 4 divided doses is most effective. Trecator-Sc is usually given concomitantly with one or two other anti-tuburculosis drugs. In order to minimize the risk of resistance developing to either Trecator or other companion drugs, the highest tolerated dose is recommended. In the adult this would be 750 mg per day to a maximum of 1 gram. Pyridoxine is one of the drugs usually recommended for use with ethionamide.
The risk of treatment failure and drug-resistant organisms can be life-threatening and may result in other serious health risks. It is important that patients adhere to their dosage schedule for full duration of treatment.
Symptoms of overdose for this medication are unknown. If you suppose that you exceeded dosage of Trecator-SC seek immediate medical attention.
For the best possible benefit, it is important to take each scheduled dose of this medication as directed. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.
Trecator-Sc is indicated for the treatment of active tuberculosis, in particular M. tuberculosis resistant to isoniazid or rifampin. It is also used when a patient is intolerant to other drugs. Its use alone to treat tuberculosis may result in the rapid development of resistance. Therefore it is usually given as a combination of drugs.
